Melissa McCarthy just made Movie Awards history: She’s now the first female to win the Comedic Genius Award.
McCarthy crowd-surfed to the stage and, with show co-host Kevin Hart’s help, accidentally knocked the Golden Popcorn clear across the stage. She jokingly called Hart, “The Rock’s assistant,” and wondered if he’d get to keep his job after that screw up with the award.
She then graciously shouted out a plethora iconic female comediennes who were just as worthy of this award, including Lucille Ball, Bette Midler, and Whoopi Goldberg. McCarthy also gave her mother a sweet mention, saying she taught her not to worry about being likable and to always “lovingly go for the kill.”
The win is well-deserved, what with McCarthy’s hilarious antics in movies like Bridesmaids, The Heat, and Spy. She’s the third recipient of this honor, following Will Ferrell in 2013 and Kevin Hart in 2015.
